OPINION: Zero budget increase is bad news
MAYOR Paul Pisasale will speak at a press conference this morning and tell us why we need to accept a small rate rise for the next 12 months.
If the rise is around $1 a week, and that's what I am expecting, it should not be too hard a sell.
Without doubt if the council brings down a budget with a zero rate increase Pisasale will be classed as a champion by many in the district.
But would a budget with no increase be in the best interests of Ipswich?
The answer to that is no. We live in a city on the move and we can't afford to let major infrastructure projects sit idle on waiting lists.
The longer you leave projects such as road sealing and kerb and guttering the more expensive they will become.
As a ratepayer I would love to know that my rates will remain the same as last year, but I am also a realist.
What I will be examining, however, will be exactly what my rates will be spent on and you can find the answer to that question in tomorrow's paper in our special six page budget report.
