Explosion heard moments before fire destroys house

UPDATE: Police are hunting an arsonist after an explosion was heard moments before fire destroyed a house at Yuleba near Roma.

Police say an unknown person entered the rear of the Creek St house about 8.40pm on Wednesday night. They left the house, driving 50 metres down the road and stopping.

An explosion was then heard, causing a fire that engulfed the timber property.

The house was destroyed.

The person drove away from the property in a white hatchback vehicle.

Police are appealing for anyone who may be able to assist with this investigation to contact Roma Criminal Investigation Branch or Crime Stoppers.

THURSDAY: Roma CIB is currently investigating the cause of a massive blaze that burnt a house to the ground at Yuleba last night.

The fire tore through the Creek Street house about 8.45pm, completely destroying the structure.

Yuleba Rural Fire Brigade prevented the fire spreading to a neighbouring dwelling, before fire fighters from Roma and Wallumbilla arrived at the scene.

It is believed no one was inside the house at the time.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services South-West Region Area Commander Roma Paul Kelly commended the actions of all crews that attended.

"As with any old Queenslander, when they collapse on themselves, it is a very difficult thing to get water onto the fire," he said.

"Old pine burns very well, and as it was declared a crime scene we didn't disturb the scene."
