Youngsters bring the heat to the court in Brisbane
BASKETBALL: The Maranoa Heat have travelled into the city to showcase their skills alongside the Brisbane Bullets at the weekend.
About 15 juniors took to the court alongside Bullets players Jeremy Kendle and Tyrell Harrison on Friday for a community practice involving skills and drills, as well as watching their idols do what they do best - but the excitement did not stop there.
On Saturday night, the Heat headed for the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre to watch the Bullets take on the New Zealand Breakers in the last game of the season and ended up playing at half-time in front of a sell-out crowd, as well as Maranoa Heat player Nash Rogers presenting the game ball at tip-off.
Maranoa Basketball Association president Mat Gane said the club could not have had a better experience.
"It was massively exciting for the kids and parents involved, for some of them it was their first time ever watching a professional game of basketball,” he said.
"The community practice was fantastic, the kids got to watch Bullets train and enjoy watching their idols do their thing on the court and then after they were involved in a practice session, where they got meet and train with some of the players.”
Gane said it was experiences like this that gave kids an opportunity to reach for the stars.
"Trying to find out how a professional athlete goes through the motions of their development and seeing an end result and actually getting paid to do what they do is something that not all kids get to see,” he said
"To be able to get that exposure drives motivation for the kids to potentially follow in their footsteps.
"Brisbane Bullets gave them that full experience and now these kids can go home with a goal of chasing that dream.”
Gane said the Heat and Bullets would continue to grow their relationship and build the grassroots game in the Maranoa all the way up to high performance.
