Young Lion gets break from heavy workload

AFL: The Brisbane Lions have decided to rest key forward Josh Schache.

The 18-year-old will not only miss tomorrow's clash with fellow struggler Carlton at the Gabba, but he will not play again for the remainder of this season after a heavy workload in his first campaign.

Schache, No.2 pick in last year's draft, has played 17 games and kicked 16 goals for the Lions.

Coach Justin Leppitsch said it was an easy decision to make to keep the teenager off the field.

"We've put a lot of weight and load through him this year and it's a bit unfair on the youngest player in the comp,” the Lions coach said.

"We've asked a lot of our group this year, particularly our younger brigade, and I know the results haven't been great, but they've had to endure more than most.”

The teenager had one rest in the opening 18 rounds.

That heavy schedule made him the only first-year player in the top 100 for minutes played this term.

Schache did not play in the round 19 match against Port Adelaide but got a recall for last Saturday's humiliating defeat by Adelaide.

He has shown he can match it with some of the best with his 21 contested marks.

"He's been terrific this year for the group and he's given our supporters some hope,” Leppitsch said.
