Young boys given chance to pursue footy dream
rugby league: Dominic Kallquist is just one player who can continue his rugby league dream following the formation of a Barbarians side this season.
With Wandoan Wildcats having insufficient numbers to fill a team in the Roma and District comp this year, combining players from the Wildcats, Carnarvon Cubs and Roma Saints provided 14-year-old Dominic and his team-mates an opportunity to play.
"If the Barbarians team wasn't formed, I wouldn't be playing rugby league this year," he said. " It gives us all a chance to play another great year of footy."
The decision to form a combined club was made by Roma and District president Justin Garvie, Western Downs secretary and Wandoan Wildcats president Teena Doherty and Barbarians joint coaches Matt Edwards and Matt Doherty.
"It's not about the clubs, the focus has been on the players," Teena Doherty said.
"It's about making sure they play rugby league and continue to support outback rugby league and our South West Region.
"There is no training, we just meet half an hour before our game on Saturdays and do a training run together.
"It has taken a few games for the players to get to know one other and adapt to the Barbarians' concept."
The three clubs involved have a turn at hosting home games and, while they mainly wear Wandoan jerseys, players wear their own club shorts and socks.
"It was a challenge to begin with until we all got to know each other and trust each other's ability. Our team is playing better and better each week," Dominic said.
"The team gives me a chance to do what I love which is playing good, tough, country footy with my friends.
"I hope to be able to play in the NRL when I'm older."
The Barbarians will play Mitchell at Mitchell from 11.50am on Saturday.
