World remains at three minutes from doomsday
SCIENTISTS monitoring how close humanity is to destroying itself have decided to keep the Doomsday Clock at three minutes to midnight, but are far from happy with that result.
The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists uses the symbolic clock to show how close they believe humans are to wiping ourselves out, with midnight representing doomsday.
The group announced yesterday that the clock would remain at the same level it was at in 2015, but said this was far from a good thing.
"That decision is not good news but an expression of dismay that world leaders continue to fail to focus their efforts and the world's attention on reducing the extreme danger posed by nuclear weapons and climate change," the group said in a statement.
"When we call these dangers existential, that is exactly what we mean: they threaten the very existence of civilisation."
