Woman on stealing spree not 'thinking straight'

PRESCRIPTION medication was to blame for a haul of largely non-essential items a woman tried to knock-off from Sunshine Plaza, Maroochydore.

Kellie Maree Krause, 30, helped herself to more than $100 worth of make-up from Priceline Pharmacy, about $120 worth of clothing from Kmart, as well as a $150 handbag and other items in December.

Krause was caught when a worker at one of her victims' stores noticed her hiding items in a trolley.

On February 9, she pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court to three counts of stealing.

The court heard Krause was taking benzodiazepines at the time of the offences and they stopped her from "thinking straight".

Lawyer Ben Rynderman told the court his client was hoping to start on a subutex program to help with her drug issues.

Krause has a history of theft and has been fined about $6000 over the years for various offences.

Magistrate Hayden Stjernqvist sentenced Krause to nine months' probation with convictions recorded.
