A 20-year-old woman who found a spotted python in her backyard and kept it for a week in a makeshift terrarium on a coffee table pleaded guilty to two charges in Rockhampton Magistrates Court yesterday.
Cynthia Louise Brooke pleaded guilty to one count each of taking a protected animal and keeping a protected animal without authority after police found the reptile in her home on November 30.
Police prosecutor Danita Clarke told the court police attended Brooke's Berserker home on an unrelated matter when she told them she found the snake in her backyard a week prior and "decided to keep it".
Defence lawyer Lance Rundle said Brooke "thought the snake looked injured so thought she would bring it into the house to look after it".
Brooke was fined $1000.
