UPDATE: A Woolworths spokesman has responded to claims a live snake was found in a bag of potatoes bought from its supermarket at The Ridge Shopping Centre.

He said the company and its suppliers took food safety extremely seriously.

"After we were made aware of the incident via social media, we contacted the suppler to ensure that their processes were up to the high standards we expect," he said.

"We've also reviewed our in-store processes and are confident in them.

"We have since been approached by the customer who has indicated she is happy with our approach and asked that the matter be closed."

EARLIER: A Toowoomba woman got more than she bargained for when she found a snake curled up inside a bag of potatoes.

The woman claims she bought the potatoes from a Woolworths in Toowoomba.

The white crowned snake amazingly survived and was released unharmed.

A snake catching Facebook site said the snake was "weakly venomous and very reluctant to bite".

"I have never even seen one open its mouth," one snake catcher said.
