Woman blames pill mix-up for abusing hospital workers

A WOMAN who threw an emergency department into chaos, abusing doctors and struggling with security, claims she mistakenly took the drug ecstasy.

Skye Louise Gerrey, 21, walked through the doors of Mackay Base Hospital on August 22, believing a Valium pill she'd taken from an undisclosed person may have in fact been MDMA (ecstasy).

Soon, Gerrey was screaming threats at doctors, undergoing apparent psychosis and hallucinations.

She was evicted before being returned a short while later to spend four days in a mental health ward.

When facing Mackay Magistrates Court on Tuesday, pleading guilty to public nuisance, Gerrey's defence solicitor Aaron Sellentin, of Barron & Allen Lawyers, said his client had schizophrenia and autism, and couldn't remember the incident.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Sabine Scott said Gerrey had no criminal record.

Additionally, Mr Sellentin said Gerrey had apologised to security and police.

Magistrate Scott Luxton said it was concerning hard-working medical staff had been targeted, but he described the tirade as "out of character", placing Gerrey on $300 recognisance to be of good behaviour for six months. A conviction was not recorded.
