Will speed bumps make Roma's CBD safer?

THERE have been polarising views on the new speed bumps in the main street of Roma, with some praising the measure and others describing it as 'ridiculous'.

Maranoa Regional Council have brought in numerous safety measures in to Roma's CBD, including speed bumps and LED lighting.

The speed bumps, which were passed by council earlier this month, were installed this week along McDowall St.

The LED light road signs will be installed at the eastern and western approaches to the CBD area.

Resident Marg Oatman said the speed bumps would be a deterrent to the main street.

"Why so many? It is ridiculous,” she said.

"I think a lot of drivers will avoid CBD area, which is not great for business.”

Deputy mayor Jan Chambers said the measures were being brought in to alleviate the stream of near-misses caused by the changed traffic conditions thanks to upgrades to the Roma CBD area around Arthur St.

"With the safety of CBD users paramount, council this week decided to go forward with implementing these temporary safety measures while the CBD Upgrade is under way,” Cr Chambers said.

"Given the temporary nature of the bumps, we will be able to move them as the location of the crossings change with the CBD development.”

Councillor David Schefe, who moved the motion to install the temporary speed bumps, has asked all pedestrians and motorists to be extra vigilant during the construction period.

"At the end of the day, the safety of our residents is the most important thing. I encourage all CBD users to please be cautious when entering the construction area and to be aware of traffic changes,” he said.
