Wi-Fi hotspots unsafe, unsecure, warns expert

PUBLIC Wi-Fi hotspot users should assume someone is watching everything they do, an internet security expert has warned.

The caution comes after a Brisbane man reported losing thousands of dollars from his Westpac account after using public Wi-Fi at Sydney Airport.

MORE TECHNOLOGY:

Comedian Casey Talbot told 612 ABC that cyber thieves stole more than $10,000 from his account on Thursday, about two weeks after logging on to the airport's Wi-Fi network.

"Because I'm a comic, if this happened to me a year ago, it just would have been credit card debt… but unfortunately this had our savings and our tax bill inside our home loan," he said.

"So they transferred money out of our home loan into our everyday savings account and then made transfers to our other savings accounts."
