White residue in Condamine River
A STRANGE white residue has appeared on the banks of the Condamine River south of Dulacca, in the wake of similar reports about the Chinchilla Weir.
Representatives of the Queensland EPA visited sites on the river last week to take samples for further analysis.
Yullabilla station owner Rowell Walton noticed the deposits about a month ago.
"As the river level dropped, it looks like there's been a contamination of some sort, and a white residue has been left behind from the high water mark, a foot above the water now."
"I'm an ex-West Australian so I know what salt lakes look like, and it looks like salt residue."
The Chinchilla Weir has recently had a similar phenomenon appear on the concrete walls, as reported by The Chinchilla News, which a spokesperson from Sunwater said was "dried up algae and moss".
Mr Walton said he did not believe the residue on his property was dead algae.
"I would find that (explanation) quite laughable," he said.
"We had the EPA come out for a look and they've taken samples away, they said it will take them a few weeks to deal with them.
Tammie Irons of nearby Balcondo station said the deposits looked like dried paint. "I cross that river at least four times a day, and I've never seen it. It's definitely concerning."
