Hey Mumma - Work/Life Balance

Which is harder, full-time work or being a full-time mum?

BATTLING infernos and locating humpback whales are sometimes easier tasks than running after kids, according to Hervey Bay mum Jodie Lynch.

But the mother of two, who works full-time as a firefighter and runs a whale- watching business Blue Dolphin Tours, wouldn't have it any other way.

Jodie has to be very organised, juggling three different agendas and doesn't know what she would do without the strong support of her husband Peter.

The biggest challenge about being a working mum and running a family business is the guilt Jodie feels about not getting to every single school event.

"We help out wherever we can at school, busy people seem to get more done."

While a domestic life may suit some, Jodie said she is more inclined to be covered in ash or sea spray.

"I'm a terrible cook, I would rather fight a fire," Jodie said with a laugh.

Jodie, who loves nothing more than keeping busy, said when she stepped into her firefighting boots she had a completely different mindset to being a mum.

She sees it as her 'me time.'

"It can sometimes be an easier job because when you're a mum there is no switching off, it is a 24-hour job," she said.

Having the business means the Lynch family gets to take time off to spend together as a family.

"I don't think my kids miss out," she said.

But each job, and yes Jodie does consider being a mum a full-time job, has its own very unique challenges.

"The hardest part about being a firefigher would be dealing with traumatic experiences like car crashes and you trying not to bring that home to your family," she said.

For Jodie the supermum, the hardest part about the home-based business is making the kids understand the business is work.
