Wheatmen thrash Roma

A FIELD lined with cheering old boys in blue and white jerseys wasn’t enough to propel either Echidnas teams to victory at Gallas Fox Park on Saturday.

The Dalby Wheatmen proved too good for both teams, with the A-Grade Echidnas side losing 40-17 and the B-Grade team losing 38-10.

It was a disappointing end to a home game that doubled as the club’s Old Boys’ Day, recognising the efforts of past Echidnas players.

A-Grade coach and club president Charles Murphy said the games were always going to be tough, with Dalby sitting at second on both ladders, but that the Echidnas hadn’t played as well as they had in previous weeks.

“Our fitness and defence let us down - especially the defence,” he said.

“There was a lot of soft tries just from missed tackles, and then our fitness in the last quarter of the match - it’s still not really there across both grades.”

In the A-Grade clash, the Wheatmen “kicked us out of the game”, Murphy said.

In the B-Grade, the Echidnas were in it until half time, until injuries and a lack of reserves cruelled their chances.

With a bye for both teams this week, Murphy said the boys had a rest on Tuesday, before running their set piece training, as well as attacking and defensive drills.

The Echidnas will next play USQ in Toowoomba on Saturday, May 28, which Murphy said should prove to be a much closer battle.

“We’re a bloody good team, but they’ve got more potential than what they’re showing at the moment,” Murphy said.
