THIS year is going to be another bumper one for new models unleashed on the Australian market.
With record sales in 2015 we seemingly can't get enough of all this new metal constantly bombarding us, so manufacturers are keen to keep the supply line flowing.
No matter if you're shopping for a micro car, SUV, hybrid or supercar there's something incoming in 2016 to add extra sparkle to each segment.
We've sifted through the more humdrum or obvious new offerings and picked the most compelling or downright ludicrous newbies set to touch down in Aussie showrooms in 2016. Enjoy.
Jaguar's first foray into the SUV world lands in the second half of 2016, hoping to steal sales from Porsche's Macan, BMW X4, Mercedes GLC and Range Rover Evoque.
Mums and dads with a penchant for style, practicality and performance should swarm to the big Brit, and it would be no surprise to see the F-Pace atop the Jaguar model sales chart, ahead even of the new XE sedan.
Prices will start from $74,340 for the base 2.0-litre diesel model.
Tesla Model X
Game, changed. If you were in any doubt that the future of motoring is electric, Tesla's Model X SUV could be the convincer.
Having shaken the performance car market to its core with the ballistic Model S, Tesla is going for mighty sales volumes in the premium SUV segment. Figures are barely believable for the seven-seater.
The all-electric Model X may weigh 2.5-tonnes, but has a range of 402km, offers boot space front and rear, tows 2300kg and has a charge time of half an hour if you get to a Tesla supercharger station.
Then there's the performance. Top speed of 249kmh and 0-60mph (96kmh) covered in 3.8-seconds.
Or option Ludicrous Mode (costs US$10,000) and that comes down to a Porsche 911 Turbo-matching 3.2-seconds.
And just for fun, it's got double-hinged "Falcon Wings" for doors.
The Model X is set to arrive in Australia in the second half of this year, with the range-topping P90D Signature Edition priced at US$132,000 in the USA (AU$187,000), but lower cost versions will follow.
Will it prove popular? Around 30,000 pre-orders suggest yes, very much so.
Range Rover Evoque Convertible
Range Rover answers a question nobody asked. But it's coming: the world's first luxury compact SUV convertible.
Love or hate the idea, the topless Evoque could well be this season's must-have in our urban style centres.
It'll arrive in the third quarter of this year priced from $84,440 (a whopping $32k more than the cheapest hard-top Evoque), and promises to be "the most capable all-terrain convertible in the world," (Rangie's words).
Terrain Response system, Wade Sensing and All-Terrain Progress Control have the proven smarts, but keeping the rag top down while serious off-roading doesn't seem wise.
Dust all over the leather I tell you.
If we leave aside Tesla's Model X, surely the most bonkers SUV for 2016 is the terribly-named Bentayga by Bentley.
Set to cost north of $400,000 when it lands here towards year's end, the great and the good can waft along in quilted leather comfort, or unleash 447kW and 900Nm of torque from a twin-turbo 6.0-litre W12 to reach 100kmh in 4.1-seconds.
It'll crack 300kmh too, making it the world's fastest SUV.
Expect 22-way adjustable seats, an 8-inch touchscreen, 10.2-inch Android device for rear passengers and handcrafted details of wood, metal and leather.
Citroen C4 Cactus
Now this is more like it, Citroen. We love the French brand's quirky specials from down the years, and the Cactus is set to be the most interesting offering in the burgeoning small SUV segment when it goes on sale next month.
The uber-funky Cactus stands out with its unique Air Bump bodywork protection, is offered in a range of fun colour combos and is well priced at $26,990 for an 81kW 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol version.
Standard inclusions look decent, with a 7-inch touchscreen, sat nav, reversing camera, cruise control and 17-inch alloys.
Sometimes we forget motoring should be fun as well as a way of getting from A to B, and the Cactus looks a perfect antidote to our glut of soulless bore-boxes on the market.
BMW hasn't been getting a great deal of love from aficionados of late, what with its niche creations (X6 and X4), dropping the naturally aspirated V8 from its M3, and the ultimate sin of going front-wheel drive (2 Series Active Tourer).
But here comes some respite. Two doors, compact, muscled, a manual gearbox and rear wheel drive fun.
The new M2, due in the first half of this year priced from $89,990, looks the most compelling car wearing an M badge right now, and a natural successor to the beloved 2002 Turbo, E30 M3 and 1M Coupe.
Its 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder offers 272kW and 465Nm and will crack 100kmh in 4.5-seconds (manual) or 4.3-seconds with the auto.
It suddenly makes its $161,900 M4 big brother - only marginally faster - look very expensive indeed.
Fiat 124 Spider
We can't get enough of Mazda's new MX-5, so the idea of a Fiat-bodied version with a turbocharged 1.4-litre under a stylish bonnet has us all aquiver.
The Fiat soft-top, expected late in the year, shares the same platform as the all-new MX-5, but every single body panel is different and the styling is inspired by the (gorgeous) original Fiat 124 Spider of the 1960s.
And as the Mazda roadster is naturally aspirated only, the Fiat's boosted engine point of difference should make for a fascinating alternative.
With four-cylinder MultiAir engine on board, the little Fiat offers 119kW and 250Nm.
The 2.0-litre Mazda MX-5's 118kW and 200Nm should make it a fun battle.
Ford Focus RS
The new Ford Focus is a bloody good car, period. But sling an RS badge on one and we can't help getting all emotional, not least when it looks this good on paper.
Due in the middle of the year and priced from $50,990, the all-wheel-drive 2.3-litre EcoBoost Focus RS offers 257kW and 440Nm - 51kW more than VW's Golf R and 26kW more than Subaru's WRX STi.
It's also cheaper than its Golf R and Renault Megane RS 275 Cup Premium rivals. High-performance hatch shopping has never been so much fun.
Talk about a returning hero, albeit a very late one. Honda's original V6 NSX - complete with its Ayrton Senna connection - was a true everyday supercar with engineering purity at its core.
The 2016 NSX successor - due late this year - is somewhat less pure, but certainly bang up to date tech-wise with its twin turbo 3.5-litre V6 and no fewer than three electric motors. The result is 427kW and 646Nm and an estimated 0-100kmh sprint time of three seconds.
Its price? Don't expect much change from quarter-of-a-million Australian, but do expect to get all excited about Honda once again.
