What to expect if you’re diagnosed with COVID-19 in Roma
AS CASES of COVID-19 spread throughout the Western Downs, hospital and health services are preparing for the outbreak to intensify and strike towns in nearby regions, including the southwest.
The South West Hospital and Health Service has revealed its comprehensive plans to manage a potential coronavirus outbreak, including ensuring each facility has adequate supplies, equipment and other contingencies.
While no cases have yet been confirmed in the SWHHS, a spokesman said a plan was in place for the establishment of fever clinics at hospitals.
“At this time, South West residents should not be alarmed about novel coronavirus, but aware and informed,” he said.
“Our experienced team of experts have responded well to health emergencies in the past, and we will do it again.”
A person is eligible for testing if they have a fever, respiratory symptoms, and have been in close contact with a confirmed case or travelled overseas in the past 14 days.
These symptoms include:
- A cough
- Sore throat
- Shortness of breath
Testing is also available for the people who:
- Work in vulnerable settings such as healthcare, aged or residential care, military, correction facilities, detention centres and boarding schools.
- Live in an area where an outbreak has occurred
- Live in a First Nations community.
Those who do not meet that criteria may not be eligible for testing, but the SWHHS said residents can still do their part by practising good hygiene and practice physical distancing.
“Washing your hands is the gold standard of health advice, as far as coronavirus goes,” he said.
“Washing your hands properly and often means that you can help prevent viruses from entering your body.
“All Queenslanders are also being asked to practice physical distancing, and also stay at home as much as possible, unless absolutely necessary. And, definitely stay home if you are unwell.”
The Darling Downs region currently has over 40 cases of coronavirus spread between Chinchilla, Miles, Toowoomba, Kingaroy, and Warwick.
