A TRAPPED turtle has had a lucky escape from a washed-up fishing net in Cape Arnhem, after a local stumbled across him on a beach walk.

JJ Harper said he found the turtle tangled in a fishing net.

He said there was a fair bit of rubbish scattered along the shore.

"They've only just sort of opened up the recreational areas here in Nhulunbuy so I thought I'd go online and book a permit out to Cape Arnhem, that's one of our nicer spots there," he said.

"There was a lot of stuff washed up on the beach because it was fairly rough out there, that was the fourth or fifth bit of net down there which we dragged up the beach.

"I saw that one, walked over and there was a little turtle in there. I got a knife out, cut him loose and set him free."

Mr Harper said marine life was still prone to getting trapped in litter despite efforts to clean up the beaches.

"It's fairly common to find turtles on that stretch of beach in there, whenever I go along there I check all the nets to make sure there isn't one trapped," he said. "This one's just a turtle who's found himself in a bit of trouble."
