Weekends of heatwave hell

SUMMER is known for being hot and dry on the Southern Downs but Mother Nature has been a bit of a Debbie Downer lately. Especially on weekends.

The region sweltered through 40 degree-plus afternoons on Saturday and Sunday while Queensland endured temperatures at least 10 degrees above average on both days.

Another heatwave is forecast for the Southern Downs on Saturday, and the highest temperatures in Warwick this year have been recorded on weekends.

But a Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman said it was coincidence (and inconvenience) that heatwave hell has been arriving when most of us are on our days off and out of air-conditioned offices.

"It's true that some areas near Warwick recorded their highest temperatures ever on the weekend such as Gatton at 45.7 degrees and Toowoomba at 40.8 degrees but a climatologist wouldn't have a theory for why the extreme heat appears to be occurring on weekends," she said.

Warwick nudged 43 degrees on Saturday which was its highest temperature this year, she said.

Melbourne University research showed commuters pouring into cities and towns during the week have driven up air temperatures and altered wind, rain and cloud patterns in recent years.

But that doesn't explain the blistering sting of summer on our days off.

Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in Warwick during the next seven days will be 36 degrees on, you guessed it, ... Saturday.

Showers are forecast for today and tomorrow.
