Wet weekend predicted, falls of up to 400mm expected

BUREAU of Meteorology has tipped falls of up to 200mm for the Mackay region this weekend, but one forecaster from Melbourne predicts up to 400mm of rain could be on the cards.

Forecaster Dennis Luke says north to Townsville and south to Bundaberg will get up to 200mm, but over Mackay it will be like putting "a towel through a wringer".

And he says the prediction is based on surface sea temperature patterns.

"When we (Victoria) get a westerly or southerly it doesn't compound itself," Mr Luke said.

If we have a tropical system then we get more rain than predicted because there is a lot going on in the upper atmosphere.

"It's more intense.  It's exactly what we got three or four weeks ago along the whole east coast of Australia."

Mr Luke said his forecast for the year was above average temperatures and above average rainfall.

"I'm not talking about just Mackay.  I'm talking about all of Australia," he said.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the heaviest rainfall for Mackay will be on Saturday with 25mm-100mm expected.

Mackay forecast:

  • Wednesday - 16-23 degrees, partly cloudy
  • Thursday - 15-19 degrees, rain 1-6mm
  • Friday 14-19 degrees, rain 15-60mm
  • Saturday 16-21 degrees, rain (possible heavy falls) 25-100mm
  • Sunday 19-22 degrees, rain 3-20mm
  • Monday 19-22 degrees, rain 2-15mm
