Barbies at risk from Australia Day spray

QUEENSLANDERS should soak up the sun while they still can, with showers expected to put a dampener on Australia Day.

The mercury in the River City is expected to climb to 31C today, while the Gold Coast should hit a top of 30C.

There are no showers predicted today, but rain could hit the state's southeast by Australia Day.

Weather bureau forecaster Michael Paech said there was still a chance of sunshine on January 26 to light up the barbecue.

"The most likely scenario is showers will pop up in western suburbs of Brisbane and hinterlands of both coasts for Thursday to Friday," he said.

Brisbane sweltered through another scorcher yesterday, as temperature reached 32.3C, while Ipswich hit 34.3C.

Further west, Birdsville suffered its hottest day since January 2014, with temperatures reaching 46.2C, soaring past January's usual average of 40C.

The heat will continue for Birdsville, with the next four days predicted to be 45C with a slim chance of a storm.

Meanwhile, further heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding is forecast to affect the state's far north.

SES far northern regional manager Wayne Coutts said volunteers were bracing for a rise in the number of requests for assistance as the wet season approached.

"The rainfall that parts of the far north have experienced in the past week is an early indicator that the wet season is just around the corner," he said.

"Now is the ideal time for locals to finalise their storm preparations before the wet season kicks off."
