'We need to stop accepting death as part of our roads': Roma Police

ROAD safety is not something everyone talks about, despite it affecting all of us.

Senior Constable Rochelle Gillett wants to change that.

The Roma Policewoman has used Queensland Road Safety Week to remind parents to educate their children and teenagers about sensible road practices.

Snr Const Gillett said whether it was on foot, by bike or in car, everyone had a role to play to make Maranoa's roads safe.

"A lot of people don't talk about it but we need people discuss road safety,” she said.

"Everyone needs to play their part.

"There are already too many deaths and the fact is most of them are preventable.

"The fatal five (speeding, drink driving, not wearing a seat-belt, driving tired or driving distracted) are the main factors. When there's a crash, most of the time one or more were involved.”

Snr Const Gillett and the Maranoa PCYC were in Westlands Plaza this week to give locals a 'test drive' on their driving simulator, which gives the participant a look at driving in a variety of conditions.

She said the message of road safety should not just come from police, but also from home, at school and in workplaces.

"Communities, schools and workplaces have been encouraged to support the week by hosting local events or sharing road safety information among staff, students, colleagues, family and friends,” she said.

"We need to stop accepting death and serious injury as part and parcel of using our roads.

"All road users, whether in a vehicle or on a bicycle, need to play their part in being responsible on the roads.”
