Protect yourself, watch out for the phone scammers

SCAMMERS have been calling people and falsely claiming to be from the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions or Australian Tax Office.

Scamwatch said the scammers had been spinning stories about arrest warrants and tax payment failures.

The organisation said they typically asked for money to be sent via wire transfer as it was nearly impossible to recover money sent this way.

They may also ask for people's financial and other personal details to access their money and use this information to commit other scams.

Roma Senior Constable Rochelle Gillett said members of the public needed to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited emails or phone calls.

"Do not give out any personal details over the phone or via email, including your tax file number, bank account details, pin numbers, passwords or any personal information," Sen Const Gillett said.

"If you have any doubts after receiving a phone call, ask for the caller's name and company and then call them back yourself using the company's generic phone number."

You can report scams to the ACCC via the SCAMwatch, and report a scam page at http://www.scamwatch.gov.au or by calling 1300 795 995.
