Wandering Warriors to walk from Brisbane to Birdsville

A NEW Australian charity is set to start with a massive walk across the state of Queensland.

Wandering Warriors has been set up to secure ongoing funding for the care and support of our veterans and their families, and for selected other charitable causes.

Wandering Warriors executive officer Quentin Masson said the charity would start with a major fundraiser when military veterans plan to walk 1600kms from Brisbane to Birdsville starting on August 3.

"There will be 12 guys doing the walk ranging in ages from early 20s to 74," Mr Masson said.

"We plan to arrive in Birdsville for the races 33 days later."

Mr Masson said they would be stopping at many major centres through the western downs on their way.

"We'll be staying in Dalby on (August) the 5th, Brigalow on the 6th, Miles on the 7th and Dulacca on the 8th of August," he said.

"Then Wallumbilla on the 9th and Roma on the 10th with a rest day to follow."

Mr Masson, a former squadron leader in the SES with 19 years' service, said he was honoured to organise the walk.

"The older generation of Vietnam vets have done a lot of work," he said.

"Now there is a whole new generation of veterans  and I feel morally obliged to lend a hand."

Mr Masson said the RSL and Legacy were on board but they were always on the lookout for more corporate sponsors.
