Wallumbilla resident highlights poor road conditions

ROAD closures around the Maranoa region can create woes for traffic, but one Wallumbilla resident has grave concerns for the state of the roads themselves since the amalgamation of the Bendemere Shire Council.

Wallumbilla resident Todd Cormack remains upset with the state of the roads around Wallumbilla, especially with the previous works undertaken by the Bendemere Shire Council.

Mr Cormack said the state of road strips like Cottage Creek Rd and Mt Everdale Rd needed more work than what has been offered.

"They (Bendemere Shire Council) never did the job properly in the first place, and now the problem has escalated," he said.

"They just threw bitumen on it and never bothered to send anyone down to take care of the whole thing.

"Now the roads are full of potholes and need more work done."

Mr Cormack claims previous work conducted on the roads was not good enough to sustain heavy traffic.

"Small patchwork may work in the short-term prospects, but eventually that unwinds," he said.

"It's good enough for a single car to drive through, but trailers and trucks aren't so lucky with the amount of potholes in the road."

Mr Cormack said he had seen significant damage done to cars that pass through the roads, with damaged rims and tyres requiring roadside stops.

But he holds greater concerns for any future accidents that may occur because of the poor road conditions.

"It's very possible that someone could lose control on the road and hit a vehicle in the other lane," he said.

Councillor Ree Price said a number of works had been carried out on the roads in Wallumbilla since flooding in 2010.

"Works prior to amalgamation consisted of routine heavy formation grading, with specific sections being re-sheeted with gravel as Capital Works Projects," she said.

Four requests regarding the maintenance of Cottage Creek Rd were received over 2014/2015, with Maranoa Regional Council carrying out inspections to identify future maintenance areas.

"Council has carried out regular maintenance works on Cottage Creek Rd, including pothole patching, shoulder grading and resealing," Cr Price said.

"Some flood damage repairs were also completed from 2010 onwards, but the current situation is ongoing."
