Vintage motorcycle riders reflect history at Allora

MOTORCYCLE enthusiasts could get their fill of vintage bikes with a range of heritage motorcycles on display at Allora Showgrounds.

While they were dwarfed by some of the larger trucks and tractors on show, the bikes were the transport of choice for members of the Warwick Vintage Motorcycle Club.

Club chairman Gary Smith said he loved sharing his passion for vintage bikes at the Allora Heritage Weekend.

"Warwick is one of 14 areas that make up the South Queensland club that has about 1100 members in total," Mr Smith said.

"These bikes weren't vintage when we were growing up, they're just what a lot of us have always known because it was all we could afford.

"As we get older, it seems we're buying earlier models, and some of the bikes we have now we could only dream of back then."

Riding motorcycles since his teens, Mr Smith said one reason to love vintage bikes was the simplicity of the machinery.

"If you know what you're doing, you can fix them on the side of the road," Mr Smith said.

"I think a lot of people like coming out just for the history and to see everything in action, not just static displays."

Mr Smith said it was important to share the affinity for the old with younger generations.

"My son Ben's probably got one of the oldest bikes here so at least there's one young fella riding them."
