UAE warns citizens not wear traditional garb

THE United Arab Emirates has warned its citizens to avoid wearing traditional clothing abroad after an Emirati national was detained at gunpoint last week by police in the US state of Ohio.

Ahmed al-Menhali, 41, was wearing a headscarf and a white ankle-length robe called a kandura when handcuffed and searched by police.

One of them threw his phone to the ground.

They were responding to a report from a hotel clerk who said Mr Menhali had pledged allegiance to Islamic State.

That information was false and police and local authorities in the city of Avon have apologised to Mr Menhali.
