Uninvited ex-boyfriend headbutts former girlfriend

A TOOWOOMBA man who head butted his ex-girlfriend in her own home during a drunken attack has copped a two-year jail sentence.

Jeffrey Leslie Laurie, 40, had taken his current girlfriend in a taxi to his ex-girlfriend's home in Toowoomba on August 8, last year.

He barged into the home uninvited and made threats to people there before head butting his ex-girlfriend, leaving her with a swollen nose, Toowoomba District Court heard.

After being escorted out by the complainant woman's brother, Laurie had taken a wooden paling from the veranda and smashed the window of a car outside before he and his girlfriend got back into the taxi and left, Crown prosecutor Shontelle Petrie told the court.

Laurie, who had spent 192 days in custody before sentence, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm in company and two counts of wilful damage.

His barrister Robbie Davies told the court his client had a long-standing problem with alcohol but since his time in custody he had been "dry and off the grog".

Judge Deborah Richards sentenced Laurie to two years in jail but declared the 192 days of pre-sentence custody as time already served under the sentence and ordered he be released on parole on April 8 after having served a total eight months.
