Two million reasons to celebrate our recycling efforts

THE Maranoa region is $200,000 richer, and they have themselves to thank for that.

Since Maranoa Regional Council launched the Containers for Change program eight months ago, two million containers have been processed.

According to Councillor Geoff McMullen, the program consistently have residents an incentive to recycle in rural Queensland, where there is no other scheme.

"Collecting over two million containers within our community is not only a wonderful accomplishment, but also helps contribute to the improvement of our environment and community," he said.

"We have reduced over 113 tonnes of waste to landfill."

Now, the next step is underway, with a goal to help build prosthetic limbs for those in need.

"Council, in partnership with Roma lions Club are now accepting container lids. These will be donated to Envision Hands, who turn bottle camps into prosthetic limbs for children in need,' he said.

"Council is very proud of the recycling efforts actioned by its residents."

The Roma Refuse Site is open Wednesday to Friday 1pm-4pm, and on Saturday from 10am-4pm.

The Mitchell Administration Office and the Roma Cartwright St Administration Office are open Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm.
