Police work to formally identify victims of car fire

UPDATE 9AM: Police are working to formally identify two people found dead in a car late Sunday afternoon.

Initial investigations suggest a car with two people inside struck a tree north of Wullumbilla about 4pm Sunday.

The car was incinerated and the bodies of two people were found inside after the blaze was extinguished by emergency services.

Police said DNA testing would be conducted today in an effort to confirm the identity of the car's occupants.

A spokesman said it was likely to be known in the next 24 hours.

Police reiterated a call for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

SUNDAY, 8PM: Two people have been confirmed dead after their vehicle struck a tree and caught on fire just outside of Wallumbilla this afternoon.

According to Roma officer in charge Cian Jacobs the crash occurred at approximately 4pm just north of Wallumbilla.

Sergeant Jacobs confirmed there was only one vehicle and two occupants involved in the incident.

Emergency services are on the scene and investigations continue.
