TV spoilers, particular GoT, on social media are bad form
YOU know to say please and thank-you, but there is a changing etiquette evolving along with technology; and it's one people need to adhere to.
Please stop posting spoilers on social media.
Game of Thrones, a television program that comes with such an amount of emotional investment that it may be clinically concerning, aired its season finale last week.
Personally I was preparing for exams, so I did not watch it the first day it aired, assuming most would allow at least 24 hours before posting about the episode.
Alas, people were live tweeting and posting sad-faced Facebook statuses with detailed descriptions of what they just saw.
Within hours news sites had evaluative articles dissecting what had happened, and even those attempting to be subtle still posted the articles coupled with pictures of now-dead characters.
I found out what had happened to not just one, but four major characters within three hours of the series finale's first play, and I wasn't the only one.
One of my Facebook friends had even taken to deleting people off social media who posted spoilers.
The issue had become such an infuriating one that joke site College Humour posted a video featuring various TV stars laying down the law for posting about an episode.
The rules? Wait two weeks for a regular episode, two months for a season finale, and one year for a series finale.
I don't want to be that strict. I want you to post your feelings about episodes and share your grief with your friends.
Just don't do it blatantly or you will have no friends left.
Use non-specific descriptions in your online posts and leave the comments section for rigorous discussion about the trauma you just witnessed.
I know it hurts.
Yes, George RR Martin makes me cry too. Yes, David and Dan haven't been kind to the storyline. No, you will definitely never love again; but I don't want to hear it.
There are others who are just as invested, and we don't want to have that first-hand experience taken from us by an ill-thought- through social media post.
