Tributes flow for Jill Baker
A LARGE crowd came to Roma's St Paul's Anglican Church on Monday to pay tribute to Jill Baker in a moving memorial service.
The former Maranoa councillor's daughter Sally Burton led the tributes in the eulogy saying they were there to celebrate a life whose dream was lived out loud.
"My mother lived a full and wonderful life and she enriched everyone here today," Ms Burton said.
"She was one of those people you could never forget."
Mr Burton said Jill was born in Sydney on January 15, 1945 but her father was away in the war and her mother died early.
She was adopted by her father's brother and grew up in Papua New Guinea.
Sally said Jill had three career goals - to be a nurse, be an air hostess and work in Woolworths - and she achieved all three ambitions.
She completed nursing training in Broken Hill in 1967 and joined Ansett as an air hostess in 1971.
She moved to Hervey Bay where she met and eventually married a leading obstetrician Dr Gerald O'Neill - Sally was their only daughter.
In 1988, Jill successfully ran as a councillor in the Whitsundays. Unfortunately husband Gerald died and Jill later met Dr Jim Baker based in Roma.
On Australia Day 1992, Jim and Jill got married and she moved to Roma.
In 1997, she was elected to Roma Town Council, topping the poll and becoming deputy mayor.
In 2001, Dr Jim retired and the couple moved to their property at Lighthouse 80km from Roma.
Jill stood for election in Bungil Shire and again topped the poll.
She retired in 2004 but stood for the newly amalgamated Maranoa Regional Council in 2008, again topping the poll in her fourth council win.
April 10, 2010 was one of the happiest days of Jill's life as she was the marriage celebrant for her daughter's wedding.
Unfortunately, both Jill and Jim became gravely ill with cancer in the following months, and Dr Jim Baker died in June.
Jill recovered but resigned from the council and moved to Sydney to be closer to her family.
She lived long enough to see her first grandson Charlie christened this year.
Jill Baker died on September 4, 2012.
One of Roma's favourite faces, Jill will never be forgotten by the numerous people who graced her life.
