IMPOSING SIGHT: Tribe 7's physicality proved too strong against UQ in the grand final match on Saturday night.

Tribe 7 evicts resolute UQ showing

RUGBY UNION: The addition of women's teams to the sevens tournament was one of the highlights and the grand final between UQ and Tribe 7's delivered on expectations.

UQ had a successful day of rugby, dispatching the Dalby Wheatchix in a 68-nil blowout, showing they could execute tries anywhere on the paddock.

Tribe 7, although not as agile, were much more physical and damaging and closed out most of their matches by pure brute force.

Tribe 7 received the kick-off and hit out immediately as the physicality at the breakdown overwhelmed UQ defenders.

Heads whirring, UQ marked up as best they could but bounced off a bollocking run by Tribe 7's number 11 who fended off three players to go in under the posts with 7-0.

UQ began to tighten themselves back up at the breakdown and committed an extra player to retain possession as they marched their way up the field.

But a poor clean-out gave Tribe 7's back possession and with another good fend number 10 was taken too late over the try line.

After the half and key coach comments, UQ finally managed to break the tribe 7's defence line, bringing them to a few meters of the try line.

Momentum seemed to have shifted toward UQ and as repeated infringements by Tribe 7's stalled potential tries it seemed a breakthrough was imminent.

However a magnificent piece of breakdown work by tribe 7's preluded a jaw dropping break out and post to post try as UQ hearts began to break.

As the match progressed the UQ defence began to stiffen but was too late to change the outcome.

As the full time whistle sounded the crowd were out on their feet and tribe 7's had dispatched the UQ sevens team 24-0.

UQ women's captain Erica Fowler said the physicality was a telling factor.

"Definitely the most physical game we've played all day,” she said.

"I'm proud of the girls.

"We brought a young team in but full credit to the Tribe 7's they played a great match.”
