Top sellers put to the test
SOME of Australia's brightest young cattle sellers will meet at the Ekka for the young auctioneers competition on August 10 including four entrants from Roma.
AJ Riley, Jake Robinson, Brady Jackson and Sarah Packer make up the Roma contingent competing for the top gong.
This year will be Ray White agent, AJ Riley's third time at the Ekka.
He said the nerves subside with each attempt.
"The very first year, I was pretty nervous,” he said.
"My legs wouldn't stop shaking the whole time I was selling.
"Last year, it got a fair bit easier so hopefully this time it won't be as bad as the first couple of turns.”
The judges will score the young auctioneers based on a number of factors, including the clarity with which the auctioneers present, their diction, patter - or selling ability, knowledge of the market, and presentation.
Each auctioneer will attempt to wow the judges on their ability to sell three steers.
"You then get a little bit of information such as where they were fed and then you just get up and sell the steer,” Mr Riley said.
"It's pretty important to understand the stock, otherwise it's difficult to sell it.”
Speech pathologists also play a role in shaping the verbal skills for the young auctioneers, according to Mr Riley.
"They show you how to look after your voice box so that you don't hurt it in any way and that you can sell all day and the week after,” he said.
