Kent fires back at stars over Greenberg pay cut
Tune into our new show Fox League Live on Channel 502 at 5pm on Sunday with Matty Johns, Nathan Hindmarsh, and Bryan Fletcher.
Paul Kent doesn't subscribe to the theory that Todd Greenberg should have to take the same pay cut as the players, but believes the NRL has shot themselves in the foot over mixed messages.
Greenberg recently agreed to taking the same pay cut as the players after Joey Leilua voiced the concerns of his peers that the NRL was not prepared to make the same sacrifices as them to save the game during the coronavirus pandemic.

However Kent believes the work involved in getting the season back on track entitles Greenberg to be paid accordingly.
"I sympathise with Todd a little bit from the point of view I don't think he needed to take the exact same pay cut as the players," Kent said on Triple M.
"Todd is still working, the players aren't.
"He didn't need to take the same pay cut, but Todd created his own problem because someone early on close to Todd leaked that the executive would take the same pay cut that the players did.
"That was seen as a feel good moment before they realised how heavy a chop the players were going to take.
"Then there was a bit of backtracking from the NRL about that and then Leilua came out and said what he said and put pressure again on Todd.
"Todd has told people I have spoken to that he always intended to take this pay cut to match the players, but the timing of it now looks like he has only done it to save his backside because the players are starting to kick up."
Fellow journalist James Hooper claimed the size of Greenberg's annual wage means that he should have taken the same pay cut as the players from the very beginning of negotiations.
"Given the fact you are on $1.5 million dollars if you have got to tell all NRL players that they have got to take this much of a hit, don't you think you have got to take the same hit yourself?" Hooper questioned.

"Particularly when you have mismanaged the money yourself," Kent replied.
"I agree with that. But the other part where I do have sympathy for Todd is that he is still working and the players will argue that they are still working and training, but they are just not training together.
"This is a tough one and this is where I lose sympathy for the NRL because they try to please all people all the time.
"If that means massaging the truth and saying things that they don't intend to follow through on and hope that everybody forgets about.
"Well this has exposed that because people are so deeply involved in this that they are remembering everything.
"They are not letting things go and the players are holding the NRL far more to account than they have for years and well done to the players for that."
