Fears grow after tourists bypass NSW quarantine
Passengers on a Virgin flight from Sydney to Melbourne are being told to immediately self-isolate after two international travellers skipped quarantine.
The stay-at-home warning from Victoria's health department applies to all passengers and crew who travelled on flight VA838 that left Sydney at midday on Saturday and arrived in Melbourne at 1.25pm.
The warning was triggered by two international travellers who dodged quarantine after arriving in Sydney and instead hopped on the flight to Melbourne. They are now in mandatory quarantine in Melbourne.
It's not yet known when the travellers arrived from Germany before flying from NSW to Victoria.
"A comprehensive public health response is underway, including testing and full contact tracing," the department said.
Victoria's Health Minister Martin Foley has said his state is "seeking an explanation" as to how the breach occurred.
"I've spoken to (NSW Health) Minister (Brad) Hazzard to seek an explanation as to how it was that the security arrangements at Sydney Airport saw the two passengers avoid their hotel quarantine obligations in Sydney and travel to Melbourne," Mr Foley said.
"He has assured me a full investigation will be completed so it cannot occur again."
It comes as Daniel Andrews is set to reveal Victoria's next round of restriction changes on Sunday, just in time for the state's "COVID-normal summer".
The Premier said earlier this week his announcement will "be good news for many people right across Victoria and it'll mark a really important phase as we lock in a set of rules for a few months".
Chief health officer Brett Sutton already hinted mask rules will be further relaxed, and density limits in pubs are set to be slashed as government workers head back to the office, the Herald Sunhas revealed.
From next week, the number of people allowed in pubs, cafes and restaurants will increase, with some "effectively doubling capacity", the publication reports.
