The WACA is always game for a quickie

Australia contemplating playing four fast bowlers in the Perth Test has become a tradition - and this year is no exception.

Despite the Aussies' crushing win over New Zealand in the first Test at the Gabba, the hosts have flagged the possibility of change for the WACA match, starting Friday.

It seems unlikely after the 208-run flogging, but 12th man Peter Siddle is an option to come in, for either fellow right-arm paceman Josh Hazlewood or spinner Nathan Lyon.

Coach Darren Lehmann said he and head selector Rod Marsh were to inspect the usually bouncy WACA wicket yesterday afternoon ahead of making sure "we've got the right 11".

Siddle, 30, played in the last Ashes Test in August, taking 2-32 and 4-35, before being dropped for Hazlewood, who picked up 1-70 and 2-68 in Brisbane.

"We feel for him (Siddle)," Lehmann told reporters yesterday.

"If he gets his chance in Perth, great, if he misses out again, that's the way it is at the moment.

"He'll get his chance somewhere down the track."

Mitch Starc will be a key in Perth, but will be a bit lighter in the pocket. On top of giving away four runs after hurling the ball at Black Caps tailender Mark Craig in frustration on the final day at the Gabba, he copped a $7725 fine from the ICC.

New Zealand has a very different issue with its own bowling stocks.

The fitness of strike bowler Tim Southee, who is suffering from a back injury, will be assessed today, while all-rounder James Neesham has already been sent home with his own back complaint.
