THE fruits of a six-week fitness challenge by Roma police officers are easy to see and Sergeant Troy Newman couldn't be happier.

Using a body composition scan to measure overall body weight, body mass index (BMI) and visceral fat levels, up to 11 officers at the Roma station participated in the competition to trim down body fat levels and manage their overall health.

And it was a success - with the officers losing an average of 3.68kg per person.

Sgt Newman said the campaign wasn't all about losing weight and wanted to focus on fostering good habits for healthy living.

"We focused a lot on our diets and increased the amount of cardio we did on a daily basis - so it's just forcing out bad habits like laziness," he said.

"Most of us know the basics of fitness, so we pushed a little harder to see the results on screen."

One officer managed to shed 5.4kg from their starting weight while all together participants lost more than 36cm in their combined abdominal circumference.

"Personally I was very pleased with the self-discipline all participants demonstrated in the six-week challenge," Sgt Newman said.

"We will try to continue with a few good habits as we move into the warmer months."
