The Roma rugby player playing at Suncorp Stadium

ROMA-born Brendan Johnstone was sure he hadn’t done enough to earn representative honours at the Queensland Rugby Junior State Championship last week.

Playing for the Gold Coast rep side, the Southport School student and his family who had taken time off work to come and support him, were walking towards their car when he heard his name called out over the speakers.

Now Brendan will play in front of 20,000 people at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night for Queensland Country under-13s as part of a curtain-raiser match for the Queensland Reds.

The tall and lanky 13-year-old said he was already feeling quite nervous about the prospects of playing at Lang Park and meeting the Reds side.

“I was shocked (when I found out I was pick) – we were in the car park about to leave and then I heard my name so I sprinted back,” he said.

“We get a VIP pass and we get to meet the Reds players.

“I’m a bit nervous – I was nervous before the Championships already but now it’s even bigger.”

Queensland Country will play City before the main event at 7.40pm.
