THE weekend's East Coast Low, combined with continuing heavy surf conditions today, has caused extensive erosion damage to some North Coast beaches.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for damaging surf, which will continue to cause localised damage and coastal erosion.

Beach conditions are dangerous and people are being warned to stay well away from the surf.

In some areas, the damage is already done.

Byron Shire resident Lucy Ashley posted this photo (taken by Ben Ormonde) of Belongil on her Facebook page this morning.

"This (now buggered) rock wall at Belongil is the 'IBAS' (Interim Beach Access Stablisation Works) that were rammed through council ... just months ago," she wrote.

"After the ECL it's in tatters, with bits of shredded plastic all over the place and posing a huge hazard to marine and bird life.

"There are boulders strewn along the beach posing a danger to swimmers and surfers, and the beach is completely stuffed.

"This work cost Byron ratepayers $1 million and the three adjacent landowners about $100,000 each.

"The community didn't want it but look at the mess we are now left with."

Ms Ashley slammed plans to build a $14 million, 1.1km rock wall at Belongil.

"If this wasn't nature giving us her view on the flawed Coastal Zone Management Plan that's currently on exhibition (the 'build a big rock wall' plan) then I don't know what is," she said.

"If you feel strongly about this issue you need to make a submission to council by 14 June. It only has to be a few sentences - but have your say!"
