Driver in fatal crash given lengthy jail term

BREAKING: The driver of a car which crashed on Toowoomba's outskirts leaving a 17-year-old man dead at the scene has been jailed for four and a half years.

Jake Andrew Gary Cooper, 20, pleaded guilty before Toowoomba District Court to a charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing the death of promising local footballer Lachlan Percy while driving at excessive speed.

Judge Brendan Butler SC ordered Cooper's sentence be suspended after he has served 16 months of the term and disqualified him from holding or obtaining a driver's licence for five years.

EARLIER: A man who admitted responsibility for the death of promising Toowoomba footballer Lachlan Percy will learn his fate today.

Jake Andrew Gary Cooper had earlier pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death at excessive speed after a high-speed crash on the New England Hwy at Blue Mountain Heights on September 5, 2015.

Seventeen-year-old Lachlan James Percy was a passenger in Cooper's car and died in the crash.

Cooper is being sentenced in Toowoomba District Court by Judge Brendan Butler SC in a packed courtroom which includes family of Mr Percy.
