Taxi passengers in Finland to get a free ride if they sing

TAXI passengers in Finland will soon be able to ride for free - as long as they are prepared to sing for the driver.

A clean-energy company came up with the idea to sponsor a fleet of BMW i3 electric cars and transform them into taxis as part of a special promotion during the Ruisrock music festival in July.

The company said the Fortum Singalong Shuttle "combines rideshares with Carpool Karaoke" and claims it is "the world's first taxi that you pay by singing".

The plan is to get more young people to embrace the idea of electric cars; Fortum is one of the largest energy providers in the Nordic region.

"With Singalong Shuttle we want to show people in a joyful way how comfortable and easy it is to drive an electric car," says Fortum's spokesman Jussi Mälkiä. "The silent electric cars make it possible to enjoy singing without background noise."

The company says the only sound that should be heard from the electric cars during the promotion is singing.

"The car runs on electricity, so the loudest noise is the one (passengers) make," the company says. "The car keeps on moving as long as you keep on singing."

The company has not outlined how drivers will mute rowdy or out-of-tune passengers but it insists no form of payment will be accepted other than singing.

"The drivers of Singalong Shuttle will not accept cash or credit cards - the only way to pay is to sing," the company says.

Each Singalong Shuttle is equipped with a sound level meter that tracks noise levels. The cars also have a tablet so the passengers can choose the songs they want to sing and follow the lyrics.
