Roma Police warns drivers: take care while overtaking
ROMA police have urged motorists to take more caution on our highways, particularly with overtaking large vehicles.
The warning comes after emergency services were called to two separate accidents earlier this week, the first of which was potentially fatal.
The incident on Monday afternoon, which occurred 12km west of Roma, happened when a 40-year-old woman attempted to overtake a truck and misjudged the length of the vehicle.
With a triple-trailer truck oncoming, the 4WD was pinned between the two larger vehicles and was flipped in the process.
The woman and child survived only because they were wearing their seatbelts, Roma police Sgt Greg Benfer said.
"Seatbelts were definitely the reason the two occupants survived," he said. Drivers are warned when overtaking other vehicles, especially large ones - they need to ensure they have sufficient distance and know the limitations of their vehicles."
In the other incident, a 25-year-old woman was taken to hospital after she lost control of her vehicle along the Carnarvon Hwy on Tuesday.
Roma police Sergeant Shane Ferry said both incidents were timely reminders to keep safe during the holiday period.
"Motorists need to keep safe by slowing down, paying attention to the road and stop when tired," he said.
