T-Rex too good for valiant Mops
TOUCH: T-Rex have taken out the the A1 touch football grand final on Tuesday night, defeating the Mops 8-6 in a close encounter at the Roma touch fields.
The game was evenly poised, with both teams trading points right until the dying stages of the match before T-Rex ran away with it, scoring a flurry of late tries.
Temperatures hovered around 6 degrees and T-Rex were just as cold out of the blocks, conceding two quick tries before mounting a comeback late in the first half to get themselves back into the match.
Player-coach Rohan Ballon said the team had been steadily building for a number of years, having worked with a core group of juniors from day one before breaking into the top division in 2018.
"We've slowly been working our way up through the grades until reaching the A1 this year and we're really glad that we could take out the title,” he said.
"We've really appreciated the step up in intensity, they've been ready for it whether it was in Roma or at different carnivals.
"Tonight, it was a very close game between two evenly matched teams and I think the finals bring out the best in each squad.
"We were down 2-0 early and we had to really pull our fingers out to get back to 4-all at half time.”
T-Rex played the Mops in the preliminary final, with Tuesday's champions also winning that match in a tight affair.
