Swans veteran to retire at season's end

AFL: Sydney Swans veteran Ted Richards still wants to play senior football despite announcing he will retire at the end of the season.

Richards (pictured) has struggled with a calf injury before suffering a broken cheekbone and a separate bout of concussion.

He said the concussion issues did not play any part in his decision to retire and would push for a recall after not having played in the AFL since round 17.

"I'm quite excited about what the next two months hold, I've got a challenge in front of me and I'm up for it,” the 33-year-old said.

"If it so happens that I don't (play again) I'm quite content, but I'm not going to concede, and I will try my best to make it hard for 'Horse' (Swans coach John Longmire) and the match committee not to pick me each week.”

The Swans take on Port Adelaide at the SCG today, with a win confirming their top-four status.
