A CIVIL war survivor, who saw her brother and father killed, will be the guest speaker at the Zonta Club of Roma's Race Day.

Leila Abuja escaped the horrors of life in Mogadishu for Australia, where she has become a strong voice advocating for women's issues.

Zonta's Conny Thomas said Leila was an accomplished academic and had experience working as an advocate in the culturally diverse area of Moorooka.

"She also ran for parliament as a candidate for the LNP of Yeerongpilly," she said.

"The strength and confidence she has gained from her past experiences has driven her to be a loud voice for not just women, but the whole community."

Ladies and gentleman are invited to attend the May 23 race day at Bassett Park.

Guests will also be treated to a fashion parade and can win some great prizes and enjoy lunch and drinks.

Tickets are $60 and can be purchased from Golders or Country Buds before May 15.
