Surfer attacked by crocodile

A 59 year-old surfer from the US was attacked by a crocodile while he was wading across a river between two surf breaks in Costa Rica,

Surfline reports that Jonathon Becker fought the reptile off and got himself to the beach before falling into a state of shock while losing a large amount of blood.

Lifeguards and local surfers reportedly assisted him before an ambulance took him to a hospital in the nearby city, :Liberia.

The Tico Times reports Becker's leg was later amputated.

Lifeguard Pat McNulty was on hand providing assistance in the moments after the attack happened.

"We live in a country where there's large crocodiles, and people take for granted that when you go into a river that you're safe," McNulty told Surfline.

"But the fact of the matter is that you need to be aware of your environment. ... We're in their world."
