Surat Basin train services closed

TRAIN services have closed from Toowoomba to Charleville after a land slip on the range damaged the railway line.

Services including the Westlander are not running, after extreme weather damaged the railway line between Spring Bluff and Ballard stations on the Toowoomba range last Thursday.

Queensland Rail Acting Chief Executive Officer Jim Benstead said crews have a big job ahead of them to stabilise the area surrounding the slip, repair the tracks and get trains running again.

"The repairs to this section of track are expected to take up to three weeks, subject to weather conditions," Mr Benstead said.

"We have established a Regional Recovery Team to fast-track repairs across the state and get freight and passengers moving as soon as possible."

Mr Benstead said there was also damage to around 10km of track along the Western Line.

"These are in isolated locations scattered over hundreds of kilometres," Mr Benstead said.

"We have divided our resources between repairing flood-damaged track around Glenmorgan, Thallon and Laidley, and tackling the land slip damage at Spring Bluff."

This includes repairing areas where train lines have washed away, testing the track and signals, checking rail bridges and removing mud and debris covering the tracks.

Motorists should still be cautious at level crossings as rail repair vehicles will continue to run on the train lines around South West Queensland.

Mr Benstead said these rail vehicles do not operate to a set schedule and will have increased frequency on the network as our people continue to assess and repair the track.

"It is vitally important people still obey all level crossing signs and signals, and to not trespass on Queensland Rail property especially in the rail corridor."

"Anyone who takes a risk with a train, be it freight service or repair vehicle, at a level crossing risks serious injury or even death."
