Suns laugh off Ablett trade talk

AFL: Gold Coast football manager Marcus Ashcroft has scoffed at suggestions his club should trade skipper Gary Ablett.

The two-time Brownlow Medallist will miss the rest of the season after re-injuring the left shoulder he had reconstructed in 2014 during the win over Brisbane.

While the 32-year-old again undergoes surgery, media commentators have speculated whether it’s time for the Suns to cut him from the list. He has played just 20 games in the past two years since first suffering the shoulder injury.

“That’s not even a consideration. Gaz is part of our footy club for the next two years and will remain to be so,” Ashcroft told SEN radio yesterday.

“We’ve still got seven rounds to go and Gary will be in and around the club providing the leadership.”

Former Melbourne forward David Schwarz was among those to throw up the possibility of trading out Ablett in order keep out-of-contract onballers Jaeger O’Meara and Dion Prestia, who are 10 years his junior.

Schwarz said it was “time to investigate if there would be interest” in him.

“If they moved Gary on and that meant they could keep Jaeger O’Meara I think that’s a no-brainer, absolutely they should look at that,” Schwarz said.

Ablett, who signed a new three-year deal last season, said he was disappointed to be sitting out again.

“Injuries are part of the game and it’s frustrating that I will miss the rest of the year, in particular after we’ve worked hard to get back to playing a much more competitive style of footy,” he said.

In what was a double blow for the Suns, scans also revealed vice-captain Michael Rischitelli suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee against the Lions.
