Success for Souths in shield but Roma Cricket the winner
SOUTHS might have won the final, but cricket in the Maranoa was the real winner from the weekend's Charity Shield tournament.
The competition saw eight seven-a-side teams play several seven-over matches on Saturday across both Gallas Fox Park and the Roma Cricket Grounds.
The Souths Gamecocks took home the trophy for their display in the final against the Flying Horsemen, belting 98 from the 14 overs given.
In reply, the Horsemen could only manage 16, but Roma Cricket president Mark Street said the result was secondary to the success of the day.
"The day went real well. We were really happy with how it went and it's exceeded our expectations," he said.
"All games were played in a really good spirit too, which is nice.
"It was fun and fast and that's how we wanted it."
Souths pinch-hitter Scotty Pearson took home the individual awards for most runs in the tournament and most sixes, many of which he belted in the final.
Mr Street said they wanted to make the event even bigger in 2016, with more teams and more entertainment.
"A big thank you for all participants on the day and a big thank you to the sponsors," he said.
"Twelve teams would be awesome for next year - we want to make it bigger than ever."
Souths made it into the final by beating the Fire Brigade, while the Flying Horsemen dispatched Colts comfortably in the other semi-final.
The Roma and District Cricket competition gets back under way for its final few rounds before the finals series.
